When the Hero Story Is a Lie
Kids, close your eyes and ears.
Fraud might be the only way to fame.
Whenever I discover fraudulent writers or phony people who become celebrities through public deceit, my blood boils. And my 17 year old, who shares a working table with me in the evenings, doesn’t necessarily come to my rescue when he tells me to close my laptop and stop hyperventilating.
But whatever happened to the “if you see something, say something”????
The Fraud Autobiographer
My first introduction to the world of fraudulent autobiographers was a book called “A Million Little Pieces” by James Frey. I had moved to America only a year earlier, in 2002, and one of my favorite places to spend time was in beautiful bookstores with chairs where you could sit and read for hours.
Other than parks and movie theaters, bookstores were one of the few places where I saw large numbers of people gathered together. I came from a country of 1.3 billion people. America, for me, often felt (feels) startlingly spacious and empty.
Even when there was no social media yet, Frey and his book exploded onto the literary scene because his story of addiction and recovery was remarkable.
The book was graphic, filled with vivid descriptions of violence, drugs, sex, and his time in a Minnesota rehabilitation center. It took the reader through a life of near self-destruction and toward survival, transformation, and redemption.
And then, soon after, his story began to unravel.
What fascinates me is that when confronted he said, “I substantially embellished my real life.”
Girl, Wash Your Face
When I had bought and listened to Rachel Hollis’ Girl wash your face audiobook, I was genuinely amused and motivated. Her comic timing was earnest, and her stories were of the perfect underdog in life trying to make it work. She was self-deprecating and humanizing in a way that I could relate to.
As I started following her, I found her out to be out of touch and poles apart from the woman she came across in her memoir. And after she catapulted in fame, she started a podcast for sustaining marriage called “Rise together” with her husband while also both were struggling to keep their marriage intact. But they were painting a rosy picture to the world.
Deepak Chopra
What can I say about Chopra that I haven’t said already.
Chopra, you’ve built an empire Chopra Well to build “a better world for all.” You’re also the same person doing what you think is locker room talk with one of the biggest known pedophiles on the planet.
But I feel like telling an 80 year old to “practice what you preach” seems like a waste of energy. So, go dig yourself a well and stay there you deeply unwell loser.
Namaste, Deepak.
Lance Armstrong
This one hurts the most of all the features here, because he was literally one of my childhood heroes. But if the entire reason why “Lance” exists is because of doping, its heartbreaking. For years he denied what he later admitted to, the systemic use of performance enhancing drugs, testosterone etc to compete and win.
So, his story of being a cancer survivor, impossible come back the Tour de France victories, Live Strong, overcoming anything at all costs – are all fabrication.
Jason Arday
See I wanted to write more about Arday, but after he ended his life this past week, I feel like I don’t want to get into it. Watch any of his videos, and even like a lay person like me can realize that he was talking a whole lot of nothing in any of his lectures or interviews. What should we make of the reputation of legendary universities like Cambridge who did not do due diligence before hiring him?
DEI issues aside, there are his young children who are left fatherless. For a world that’s desperate for superhero stories, we are not doing a good job of keeping wannabes from duping us.
Jay Shetty
Shetty has the number one podcast on mental health. It still seems to be considering the major expose article on him on Guardian.
Indian monk in the workplace teaching mindfulness. He noticed there’s a gap in this space where he can build a brand. Come on, who will deny you attention if you say, you know what you’re doing if you say you’re from India and were a monk. Right?
Many videos have come out about his plagiarized quotes, his coaching business which looks like an MLM business from the inside, his damage control after the expose and his wife who looks exactly like him except for, she has lovely long hair that she keeps styling live on her YouTube channel.
Give me a break.
Salt Path Couple
For a while I had this book, the Salt Path, as a book on my wish list, and thank God I didn’t get to it before the story unraveled. Got lucky on this one. Literally everything, the names, the story, the disease, around this book and the movie adaption was fabricated.
This lady literally self-published the plot point of this “memoir” years earlier. After the Observer article expose came out about this couple, we found that everything in the book is absolute horse shit.
The lady even had the gall to defend herself, “The story may contain significant omissions and reframings that fundamentally change what happened.”
Mia Ballard
“The bows on my pigtails pull too tight, yanking the skin and stretching my head into something neat, into something pleasing, a quiet violence made beautiful.”
Yikes.
This is what Mia Ballard wrote in her novel before online users started pointed strange AI slop in every chapter.
Amazon has a limit of 3 book uploads per day. And that’s proof that the self-publication industry has been dealing with this AI generated content for a while. Publishing on Amazon requires checking the box YES or NO to the answer for if AI was used in the creation of uploaded manuscripts.
Some people might question, why AI creativity is bad. It is bad because it’s not coming out of a human brain and even, I can generate something seemingly glorious using a prompt and don’t have to necessarily read someone else’s prompt engineered slop.
Rucy Cui
Hey, sorry this needs a content warning. I’m about to review an unpalatable vulgar fictional story by a writer who has won a $75k/yr fellowship prize for this gem. A full 2-year creative writing fellowship at Stanford, nonetheless.
The opening paragraph reads like this:
“My white boyfriend and I are newly returned from holiday travels… We fucked on every flat surface available to us, including the vertical ones—bathed in equatorial sweat and pheromones, slick as babies.”
Please someone, shoot me. Or read it for yourself here.
I Have Got No Words
See if you choose to be a common man, I could hardly care. But you choose to put yourself in the limelight and are out selling your personal brand and profiting out of it. And if you’re doing that with embellished truth and fabrication, shame on you.
Don’t tell us you’re a hero, survivor rebel, genius etc because you made up all these cute identities for yourself in your head that you think might be appealing.
More importantly, what about publishing houses, editors, producers and other agencies who first come across these “inspirational people”? Just like how news stories are vetted, these emotional mythological characters need to be fact checked.
Start At Fraud, Arrive At Fame
At this point, maybe I should just announce that I am a goddess visiting Earth. Something like an Indian Truman Show situation. I’m just a misunderstood genius sent to earth to save humanity by being a monk, miracle, rebel, writer and mother.
Well, nothing else seems to make me go viral, even when I have all these articles here for the past 18 years.
In a world that doesn’t seem to have a problem with manufacturing extraordinary identities, my idea will surely fly!
Hello, Any Fact Checkers Here?
I have seen it since the Frey days. James Frey became the protagonist of his own redemption story by creating a tougher and darker version of himself. Because greater the obstacle, greater the hero who survives it, isn’t?
Even now in the influencer economy, we continue to build an entire industrial complex willing to reward these “extraordinary protagonists” with platforms and praises.
And then leave it to the internet to do the research and fact checking afterward?
Every single time. Ugh.
