Teens, Tech and Life Skills

These days, little girls and boys are acting as therapists and counselors for their friends who’re struggling to navigate school. Teens are experiencing anxiety and panic attacks at an alarming rate. The American College Health Assn reports that in 2011, 31% of female freshmen had experienced anxiety or panic attacks and in 2016, the number had doubled to 62%.

When teens spend a lot of time online and not connecting deeply with their surroundings and circumstances in real life, it goes against their basic developmental evolution. When they don’t progress from basic human interactions at school to the dating scene in their colleges, they’re left helpless not knowing what to do.

Getting a driver’s license, having a part time job, experiencing first love – all these teach teens patience, persistence and people skills. Helping parents with booking travel and doctor appointments, interacting with a cashier at checkout, and coordinating the schedule at a family event can all be helpful life lessons.

What has to change immediately? Teens are sleeping with their phones and acting and reacting to everything on their phones. How sad is that our children and us have to rely on the likes, and hearts we’re collecting online? Is it safe for our self-esteem relies on reaction or a non-reaction of others to our posts?

Articles On Mindful Parenting

It’s not only children who grow. Parents do too. As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching us to see what we do with ours. I can’t tell my children to reach for the sun. All I can do is reach for it, myself.
