Disparities And Bias Against The LGBTQ+:
Recent data from the Center for American Progress shed light on the prevalence and effects of discrimination against LGBTQ+ communities of color. Access to personalized health care is essential for those of every background.
Unfortunately, some disparities make it difficult for members of the BIPOC community, especially when it comes to treatment for substance misuse.
Here are some facts:
- Forty-two percent of LGBTQ+ adults identify as people of color, including 21% who identify as Latino/a, 12% Black, 2% Asian, and 1% as American Indian and Alaska Native. This is more diverse than the overall U.S. adult population, which is 60 percent white.
- 1 in 5 youth in the juvenile justice system identify as LGBTQ+, 85 percent of whom are people of color.
- LGBTQ+ people of color face high rates of unemployment.

Important LGBTQ+ Addiction Treatment Options:
Studies show that members of the LGBTQ+ community use drugs more frequently than their heterosexual counterparts. A 2016 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that about 39 percent of queer adults had used illicit drugs in the past year. This is more than double the amount of heterosexual adults included in the same report (about 17 percent).
Furthermore, the same report found that about 15 percent of LGBTQ+ people reported having a substance use disorder (SUD) in the past year, compared to only 7 percent of non-LGBTQ+ people.
