Certain experiences sharpen our sense of being alive, like revisiting our day while journaling at night, the fleeting jolt when a stranger’s gaze catches yours across the room, or wandering cobblestone streets in a new city.
The Nile, too, is such an experience.
I’ve not written a love letter to a river, but if one could be written to nature, this would be it. When I was on the Nile this past week, I could just be who I am and not the flurry of activity for which I’m paid at my day job.
As I sat in a deck chair on top of the cruise boat and gazed at its still waters, my heart mirrored its silent hum.
As we traversed the contrasting landscapes of fertile fields to deserts along the dusty towns of Aswan and Esna, the Nile took me with the grace and free spirit of a woman who moves through the world unbothered by what others think of her.
As the Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.”
Indeed, I am not the same person who boarded that boat. No moment will return and that’s the nature of our existence. The past is a different person, it would have done everything differently. The Nile teaches us to extend grace to that former self, that we can redeem ourselves through our experiences and are better because of them.
We mistake our transient emotions and thoughts for our essence. We let past actions that didn’t serve anyone define us. But we don’t have to. Be like the Nile, transparent, yet not entirely obvious.
If anyone ever complains about what has life given them, I will grab their hand and shut them up by showing the miracle of the lush, abundant fields blooming along the banks and life flourishing in quiet extravagance.
Up in the north of Egypt in Alexandria, I watched the delta fan out with Nile’s eagerness to merge with the Mediterranean sea and to nourish the planet on a bigger scale than its original self. It merged into it unconditionally, surrendering its identity without protest.
The price of admission to our breathtaking life is already steep. Why complicate it further? The world is full of strife, do we really need to add our own drama? Drop the ego. Fail once in a while. And just do your part.
As Chapter 2 of the Gita describes the person as a sthita-prajna, the one who acts without being bound to results. We must do what’s ours to do, and simply be.
The river sustains life and fertility without demand, because it’s doing its duty in doing so. It’s just being there for us beckoning you to use it fully to foster community growth as a true team player, and not asking for anything in return except for to respect it.
Life is enduring in its continuity because its constantly evolving. Nature, through the Nile reminds me to embrace this impermanent nature of our existence. Effortless living is flowing with this flux rather than against it.
In Chinese philosophy wu-wei means inaction or effortless action. Not making an effort, not trying hard to resist. Intentional surrender means living in alignment with life’s currents. It means accepting change and finding strength in yielding.
Growing up, I often heard the phrase “go with the flow” whenever things got tough. Only now do I appreciate its true meaning.
I will swim downstream, not because it’s easy, but because it’s in alignment with life’s currents. Why fight when I can flow?
This will be my guiding mantra for the new year.
