Surrendering to our Two Worlds
There’s no better time than the fall in the US where I see the beautiful dichotomy of our lives. I love learning from my children who effortlessly navigate their two worlds – America when outside in public places and India at home.
In 2024, this contrast was even more pronounced when Halloween and Diwali fell on the same day. We were in our Indian clothes just wrapping up our pooja while attending to little kids at our door demanding trick or treat. It was magical.
In spirit, usually we’re celebrating two famous festivals during this time. Diwali with ushering in light, food and family – and celebrating the victory of good over evil. Halloween, with the intentional expectation of coming across the kindness of strangers at their homes and ask if they would treat us.
And the beauty is we don’t have to choose between these two worlds. We could belong to both.
Gratitude for the Ordinary Miracle of Life
There’s more we share as humans than what separates us. Everyone around us is just trying as best you to thrive. We just don’t know what their personal circumstances are. When we understand that, kindness becomes easier. Connection becomes natural. Our hearts melt.
As festivals come and go, I often find myself in awe of the miracle of life all around me. I feel grateful for so many things in life that had to come together for this beautiful moment to happen.
Even grateful for this time and place and for my ability to convey these sentiments via this medium.
Shine the Light Bright
Imagine the stroke of a match stick can pierce a dark room with its radiant light. Curiosity is one part of that inner light. It’s the spark that makes you ask questions, explore possibilities, and imagine a life beyond what seems safe or familiar.
Become intentional about nurturing your inner strength, especially when life feels tough and unpredictable. Gather that courage and make conscious choices to transform that inner light into action.
Lighting a lamp is a deliberate act. Choosing to cultivate self-awareness, kindness, and clarity is just as deliberate. This Diwali, let your choices reflect the light you want to see, within yourself and in the world around you.
Find your strengths and do what sets your heart on fire. Do it well. Do it again.
You never know when that bright light from within you will serve as a guide for someone trying to find their way out of the dark.
Happy Diwali. Shine from within.
