Growing up, there was tons of inspiration around me. Some of it came from what I read about the greatest people that lived or were living and doing unimaginable things. And other inspiration came from those around me, who were always trying to do their best, no matter what the circumstance.
That led me to believe that we’re all here on this planet for a reason. It’s a beautiful life that we must be intentional about. We can all be doers if only we choose to be.
If that’s a mindset you have, you can raise children in the same way. Ask them, “What is your cause that can make the world a better place?” Tell them that it might be a big question, but it’s something they can start thinking about from a young age.
Sure, they can earn lots of money, buy an island and live happily. Even then, they might still have a special gift to solve a burning problem for the world.
Teach your child not through words, but with your own caring attitude towards your community. When you show that action matters, it has a profound impact on their little minds. When you demonstrate your personal values, and stand up for the causes that you believe in, children will follow in your footsteps.
Ask them where they would like to volunteer their time and contribute. Isn’t that the best way to keep them off their devices and also out of trouble? What’s more, when they take charge of their time and focus on a destination, they feel empowered to take on anything that comes in their way.
Money will give them options, but service will give them the fulfillment that even a billion dollars in the bank cannot give. Instead of focusing on becoming thrill seekers, we can turn them into selfless and engaged civilians. We can encourage them to chase meaning and purpose in life instead of material things.
Begin by asking them to start local. Have they thought about all the issues that your community is currently facing? They can gather around with kids in their age group to get a sense of what’s needed and start focusing on improving the situation.
After all, we can show them that there are advantages to becoming externally focused. When we start thinking of others, we stop being the center of our universe and quickly realize that we’re so much better off than so many others in the world. Isn’t it?
