The Need For Updating the Copyright Law

David Baldacci, an American novelist, is hitting back hard at Big Tech over AI and copyright. He went to a Senate Judiciary Hearing this month to lay out how the tech giants are exploiting author content. He insists that if Big Tech can mine books for AI training, maybe no one deserves copyright protection anymore. He argues that major publishers and platforms are failing writers by allowing sweeping usage of literary works to train large language models without fair compensation or consent.

Baldacci calls for structural change with a new system where authors are recognized, paid, and protected.

He challenges the idea that copyright is obsolete in the AI era. Instead, Baldacci says, we must evolve copyright law to the present moment. He envisions contracts and licensing that reflect AI’s scale and power, not just the old guard’s print‑era framework.

In the end, Baldacci wants fairness for content creators, transparency from AI firms, and a legal basis that ensures authors benefit from the AI economy they’re helping to build. Hope this fires up the debate who owns what in the publishing and tech worlds. If you care about where your words go and who profits from them, Baldacci’s call is both urgent and unapologetic.
