QUESTION III:
What are some ways that educators can integrate Al in their STEM teaching? Please give specific ideas and examples.
Sometimes, tools that we as teachers want to use might be blocked by the district. But, they might not be blocked at home.
We’re sometimes overtly focused on content creation than skill building and skill mastery. So we need to think about what action the student was able to successfully complete during class. “What’s the verb we’re addressing on developing today?”
When using an AI prompt, ask the kids if AI is covering all the aspects of the discussion. “How does the responses from the AI cover the topics of the rubric?” This helps children feel like they are in control of the solution, and not relying on the AI fully. It also gives them the kids a chance to tap into media literacy. “What is a fact and what is falsehood?” What’s the evidence, is it qualitative or quantitative.
Hallucinations, is the term that’s being given to the response given by AI which is considered true based on the data, but it is not true. And when kids don’t crosscheck the information they are receiving from the AI prompts and turn that in as homework is when they get caught. This can be used as an opportunity to help them understand how to do their own due diligence.
Allowing creativity to thrive more and spending less time on training. With generative AI, children can experiment with creating videos, or music by tapping into their imagination.
Teachers can use AI to generate questions for the classroom or create a variety of problem sets for subjects like science and math to test their ability of the concept being discussed in class. In Coding classes, creating AI prompts for partial coding projects where the students will have to complete the project can be one idea.
AI is very good at data analysis, so for any Statistics or any data science class, upload the spreadsheet to the AI and then compare their own work to what the AI interpreted about the data is also a good exercise.
And we can also talk about the role of AI in our classes – how’s the data being used, how are algorithms being built, what are the different ethical issues, what’s the environmental impact of using tech, data privacy etc. These can make up so many classroom discussions and help build critical thinking skills.
There are ways that the teacher can be using AI to help deepen the lesson experience for the kids. Here’s an example using the Google Bard and the Claude assistants.

QUESTION IV:
What do you see as the future of Al and technology in STEM education? How might these technologies continue to evolve and shape the learning landscape? What resources do you recommend
for supporting educators who want to integrate Al in their STEM teaching and learning environments?
It’s an exciting time to be in the education field and have so much access to AI. There’s a great chance to understand the real life applications of what we’re learning in the classroom. Quick feedback and iterative process of learning, the ability to ask questions in a non-threatening environment. The potential for accessibility and universal design means that every child can be met where they are at their learning journey.
The first tool that we must be have is an “open mind” about the unknown potential of AI. Yes, we feel overwhelmed and challenged at times about how much we need to understand about the new technology, but an open mind allows us to discover and unleash our curiosity.
Join your local chapter of the Computer Science Teachers Association. Get involved in the conversation around policy of education. Here’s is a good resource to know about. The Office Of Educational Technology. https://tech.ed.gov/
How to teach kids equity? To answer that, we can refer to the Digital Citizenship Curriculum by Common Sense media, here’s the link: https://www.commonsense.org/education/digital-citizenship/curriculum
Work and explore the projects for middle schools kids on Project-STEM.com. Minecraft EDU has releases some new AI models to tap into. Google labs, teachable machine is a cool tool for that. https://teachablemachine.withgoogle.com/
We can have hyper adaptive learning platforms to adapt to our students’ needs, we can also alleviate a lot of teacher burnout that teachers are experiencing. Building lessons plans and administrative tasks can be offloaded to AI systems, so teachers can focus on direct instruction. The classrooms will become more interactive and roleplaying can increase.
One of the resources is the book, AI and the Future of Education: Teaching in the Age of Artificial Intelligence By Priten Shah – he’s one of the panelists.
There’s this FREE course: Google: Google AI for Anyone available on: https://www.edx.org/learn/artificial-intelligence/google-google-ai-for-anyone
There are other AI powered tutors that are being explored. Khanmigo by Khan Academy. And Robokind for more marginalized kids with autism and other developmental disorders.

Conclusion:
Finally this AI revolution in Education will be a success if we teachers are ready to push ourselves to adapt and imagine a future where children are benefitting enormously because of how well the AI is integrated into their daily learning. That way the language will shift from AI is being used by the students to cheat and plagiarize to all the brilliant things that are possible by our collaboration with AI.
AI cannot be implemented on a large scale without a complete comprehension of the consequences. So, begin with small projects first and analyze risks and benefits. Then get a buy in from stakeholders and sponsors for larger implementations.
We can collaborate on helping make AI more inclusive, and ethical, as it helps super charge our potential and productivity as educators and students.
