What Is Commitment?
Commitment demonstrates our inherent spirit of resilience. Commitment is a promise we’ve made to ourselves of an expectation to work with excellence, loyalty and bravery. When we honor our commitments, we are making a difference in the lives of those around us who look up to us and who rely on us to show the way.
Commitment in action looks like optimism, team spirit, discipline and self-efficacy. It is seen in those taking action, in those who forgive unconditionally and those who keep moving with ambition inspite of insurmountable setbacks.
Our commitment to ourselves and others comes in the form of three rocks. The big ones, the gravel, and sand. Allow me to explain.
The big rocks, the most important non-negotiable things in our life that are big audacious goals. The gravel are the ones that we owe others in our eco system who are allowing us to thrive. The sand is the filler tasks that fill up our time, and if we wait long enough not doing them, might not even matter in the end.
Invest In Yourself
When we invest time and energy in our own personal growth, it gives us momentum to break out of inertia and our bad habits. Acquire new skills and get out of comfort zone while trying them out. Look at your ecosystem. What are the things and people that are allowing you to thrive and what are the things that bring you down. Cut those out.
Build A Partnership
As our duties grow, we start taking on more things that we can’t handle. Give your team more autonomy at home and work. Imagine yourself in a network web and not on top of a pyramid. After all, it’s very lonely at the top. Inform, engage and stay in touch to ignite the passion of contribution in others. Deliver your side of the partnership so others feel committed to keep up their share of the work.
Focus Externally
The two most important things humans crave are:
a. To do important work
b. And to have financial independence.
When we are doing work that is meaningful to ourselves and is enriching the lives of others in a positive way, our sphere of influence increases. And money will follow the impact we are creating.
Think Contributions
Inspite of everything else, a sustainable goal is at the very least an intention. It’s a choice you’re making to commit to all bite sized tasks that make up that Herculean goal you have in front of you. Is that goal self-serving or serving the greater good? That’s a question you cannot to forget to ask yourself.
Manage Expectations
Offer unconditional support to those around you, while setting clear expectations. We all manage our time and expectations, things stay civil and we live happily ever after. Right? Well, that’s hardly the case in our real life of deadlines and to-do lists. Our desire to do “something more fun” mostly overtakes our need to do the task at hand that’s hard and important.
Show Commitment
No matter how you feel, show up every day. Not for others, but for your own self, show your commitment for personal excellence.
Commit today to identify an area of problem that you know you can bring about positive change. After all, empowerment comes via taking responsibility and committing to the belief that you can make a difference.
