Lake Minnewanka, Banff: Submerged Villages, Mountain Goats and a Full Moon

I saw Lake Minnewanka last week, and its silence shook me.

This glacial lake in Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, is breathtaking, with its dramatic mountain views and kayakers and canoeists gliding across the water.

But sitting at the edge of its waters and thinking about a resort village submerged here in the 1940s was spooky. No wonder the lake is called Minnewanka, meaning “spirit.”

On our way back, we passed mountain goats eating stones, gathering the minerals they need to survive. I never thought I would see goats that were stoned.

It was going to be a full moon night, and I wondered how spectacular the moon over the mountains would look.

Would these tender waves lapping at my feet be forceful then?
