The Anxious Generation with Jonathan Haidt
I have written so much about Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt’s work, I might as well be on his marketing team LOL.
In this interview, he shares four practical steps from his bestselling book, The Anxious Generation to reduce the impact of smart phones on kid’s lives 📱🙅
Jonathan Haidt, in his interview on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show, outlines four norms to help reduce the negative impact of smartphones on children’s lives, as detailed in his book The Anxious Generation. Here’s a summary of the points:
1. No smartphones until age 14: Delay giving children smartphones until they’ve at least gone through early puberty to avoid early exposure.
2. No social media until age 16: Social media is inappropriate for younger kids due to risks like addiction, manipulation, violence, and unwanted adult interactions.
3. Phone-free schools: Advocate for schools to ban phones from bell to bell (not just during classes) to allow kids to focus on learning and interacting with peers. Contact school heads to push for this change.
4. More independence, free play, and responsibility in the real world: Replace excessive screen time with real-world activities, chores, and unsupervised play to foster growth and a sense of purpose, countering feelings of uselessness from virtual experiences.
