The Still Face Experiment
Developed by psychologist Edward Tronick, the Still Face Experiment reveals something profound about early emotional development. In the experiment, a parent interacts warmly with their infant – cooing, smiling, and responding. Then, the parent suddenly becomes unresponsive, holding a neutral “still face.” The child, confused by the sudden disconnect, begins to try everything to re-engage the parent – smiling, reaching out, even crying.
This pattern – connection, disconnection, and repair – is essential for emotional growth. It’s not perfect attunement that builds resilience in children, but the opportunity for repair. When the child’s efforts to reconnect are eventually met, it helps them develop trust, emotional regulation, and a sense of mastery.
Interestingly, research shows that parents and children are only emotionally “in sync” about 20–30% of the time. The magic lies not in constant harmony, but in the healing after the rupture. Even at such a young age, the child begins to ask, “What happened? Is something wrong with me?” And when reconnection happens, it teaches them: I can feel disconnected, but I’m not alone. I can reach out, and I will be seen again.
