Let’s do an exercise. Imagine that I will take away everything you hold dear to you. Now read along.

Gratitude encompasses thankfulness, acknowledgment, recognition, and praise. When we lack joy and abundance, genuine gratitude becomes elusive. It permeates our thoughts, words, and actions, making it one of the most attractive characteristics a person can possess.

Gratitude connects us to the whole, fostering a sense of friendliness with the world. It encourages kindness and generosity, while also helping manage stress. When we practice gratitude, anger and fear find little room to thrive.

Acknowledging our place in life involves both celebrating our accomplishments and recognizing our role in our own suffering. It takes courage to appreciate where we are and to affirm our self-worth.

Regardless of circumstances, we are immensely privileged. Come to think of it, even Julius Caesar would be envious of our modern day lifestyle. So let’s embrace gratitude.

All said and done, if gratitude leads you to question the emotional gifts you’ve received, be cautious. Convincing yourself that your decisions are wrong is a pitfall you must avoid.

How does gratitude look like in action? Start with enjoying what you have. That is the first step. Recalibrate your life often to gain perspective. Keep a journal if you want to look back at how far you’ve got.
