Feelings like hope and courage are in built in us, but we don’t readily access them. But, talk about being realistic, pessimistic and even cautiously optimistic, we are ever ready to embrace them.

If bringing out your courageous self is a bit too much for you, start small. Instead of saying that you’ve got everything inside you to win that tennis match, just tell yourself that you will do your absolute best.

The reason why this is important is because the alternative to good feelings like optimism and courage are really debilitating to our progress. Pessimism is corrosive and realism lacks imagination. On the other hand, thinking positively about an outcome as you work towards it gives you courage and motivation to stay on the path.

Moreover, optimism is one of the most powerful predictors of work performance. Optimists set more goals and put more effort into attaining these goals. They stay more committed in the face of difficulties and overcome obstacles more easily. They cope better with high-stress situations, and expecting positive outcomes makes them more possible to bounce back.

Optimism makes us into a highly generative person who is caring, productive, and committed to making a positive difference in the world.

How does optimism look like in action? Start by focusing on the solutions not the problems. See a plant grow every day, there’s something radical about it. Ask a friend to be your accountability partner, so they can act as your cheer leader when you face setbacks.

Train your body and mind, exercise, even a simple walk around the block can release endorphins in your brain to help you feel better. Focus on what you can do in any situation, not what can go wrong.

Understand what is in your control and what is not. Remove everything you have in your life and then add them back. One by one. And see how much you have. What are you waiting for, put that smile back on your face and charge ahead.
