What Are We Doing When We Are Mindful?

Let us find out how we know we’re being mindful at any given time. We are doing these below things if we’re being in the moment.

• Putting the focus on us not on external things
• Creating distance and objectivity
• Connecting with what is happening with us
• Bringing clarity
• Transitioning from being reactive to proactive
• Easing anxiety and stress
Building an internal locus of control

Managing Anxiety

When we are in the moment, we develop a perspective. We then can manage our anxiety well as parents. Remember, children ask us for our love not our anxiety.

• Accepting ambiguity and anxiety
• Challenges are not a reflection of parent competence
• Challenges are not a reflection of child’s competence
• No such thing as a perfect parent, child, or family

How Do We Become a Mindful Parent?

• Make an intentional commitment to being mindful
• Build in regular reflection habits
• Take responsibility
• The child is not the problem, you are not the problem, your response the problem.
• Think about how to change yourself, not your child
