The first step of understanding the world starts with understanding ourselves. When children are put in situations where they have a chance to soak in real world experiences, they also develop the skill of regulating their internal states.

That skill has its foundation in first knowing and understanding how we feel. The concept is called self-awareness. When we can learn to label our emotions and experiences, we communicate well. After all, emotions are nothing but a hedonic evaluation of whether we like a particular experience or not.

When we teach our children to self-regulate, they learn to manage their emotions, their relationships and their experiences. A combination of these regulations help them develop into autonomous adults.
