Back around 2005, my husband and I were still watching TV together in the evenings. One of the shows we’d tune into was Grey’s Anatomy. Yes, we had claimed our solidarity and remained fully committed to each other in spirit, but there seemed to be an unspoken rule while watching the show. We each got to quietly enjoy our respective eye candy without commentary.
Hey, we were just doing what any sane married couple does to sustain their marriage.
Well, now that the cat’s out of the bag, one evening a “McSteamy” (played by Eric Dane) entered into our living room through the TV screen. As I held my breath to see if his towel would slip, I had to remind myself, “Don’t be silly, the execs at ABC would never let that happen, this is a family show.”
After that night, I decided McSteamy would be my new crush. But, soon, I realized he had become the nation’s crush, with his good looks, swagger, and effortless charisma on screen.

It’s been 20 years since that evening.
And just now, I watched Dane leave a final message to his daughters. He passed away from complications with ALS this week.
“I hope I’ve demonstrated that you can face anything. You can face the end of your days. You can face hell with dignity. Fight, girls, and hold your heads high. Billie and Georgia, you are my heart, you are my everything. Goodnight. I love you. Those are my last words.”
Here are his four urgent requests to his girls (and us).
1. Live now, in the present.
2. Fall in love with a purpose (better if it’s a human).
3. Choose your friends wisely.
4. Fight with everything you’ve got.
All around me, I see people battling neurological disorders, ALS, MS, and so many others, and it breaks my heart. I’m deeply grateful for how Dane used his platform and to raise awareness for these devastating diseases through quiet courage and advocacy.
As McSteamy, Eric Dane brought a charisma and screen presence like no one else. From his very first episode on Grey’s Anatomy to this final, vulnerable act, he showed us there’s bravery in being seen. In a world obsessed with youth and perfection, he chose visibility in weakness. The wisdom from a man who’s facing his mortality is powerful because there’s an urgency with his message.
What he ultimately tells us is that our presence matters far more than our productivity. We must connect, lift one another up, and make life more bearable for everyone. That, in the end, becomes our true legacy.
We must remember to fight with everything we’ve got and to never let our spirit down. We must face our hardest days with dignity.
I used to swoon over him in that iconic towel scene. Now I swoon over his words. In this final role, his words have a potential to make us rethink our own legacy.
From crushing on McSteamy to being inspired by Eric Dane the man, you’ve made your journey memorable.
