A Slow Drive Through Spain’s History and Heart

I have a million essays planned about Spain. I’ve already written about some gorgeous places HERE. We went on a 16-day road trip through Spain, starting in Barcelona, traveling to the tip of Catalonia, looping around to the southern coastal tip of Andalusia, and finally ending in Madrid.

We caught plenty of sunlight along with the country’s gorgeous history. Here’s a quick roundup before I get to all the things I want to write about Spaniards and Spain!

The main agenda was to attend a wedding in Sitges, a coastal town in Spain’s Catalonia region. But only after we went around town sightseeing did we come across the nude beach and learned from locals that Sitges is the gay capital of Spain. You’ve got permission there to be queer, artistic, and unapologetically yourself.

We started our journey after landing in Barcelona and driving to Sitges. Barcelona is exactly like India with its human activity at full volume, minus the gigantic number of people and the trash. Everyone walks there, and all you have to do is ask for directions to a place, and people will literally walk a kilometer with you to take you there.

We traveled through Valencia, Toledo, Seville, Córdoba, Málaga, Ronda, and of course, Granada, where the Alhambra showcases the influence of the Islamic, Jewish, and Christian cultural blend.

I begged my family to take a day-long detour to Frigiliana because the Instagram pictures of the bougainvillea were just irresistible.
