In Sitges, a coastal town in Spain‘s Andalusian region, we once attended a beautiful mehendi function. A mehendi event is a pre-wedding celebration where family and friends gather to decorate the bride’s hands and feet with henna. Henna (or natural tattoos) is meant to bring color, good luck and happiness into the festivities and the union of the groom and the bride.

Scientifically, the henna leaves cool the body, calm the nerves and help the bride relax before the wedding. Practically speaking, hands are where the designs can be shown, admired, and shared — during greetings, photos, and rituals — making the blessing visible, not hidden.

Families decide what music to play, and what food to serve based on what the couple wants. And boy, what a posh event this was!
