The Power of Goodwill
“You are everyone; everyone is you. Let goodwill prevail…”
24 years ago, when I had moved to America, I was looking for ways to understand this brand new world and its culture. Very soon, I found out that we are country of givers and kind people when I got an opportunity to volunteer at a soup kitchen. And that’s what I want to talk about today. Something that feels almost too simple to be powerful, yet is the very thing that holds the fabric of humanity together: goodwill.
In a world that often feels like no one cares, and we’ve too much conflict with our neighbors and fellow Americans, there’s something that binds us more than seperates us. And that’s this unassuming force of goodwill we all inherently have within us.
Goodwill doesn’t have to be grand gestures, it can be as small as a kind word, a moment of patience, or the decision to see yourself in someone else. And the compound effect of is exponential. When you pay back, others around you get inspired to do the same.
The Magic of Goodwill
Here’s my challenge for you. We can all start small. We can smile at a stranger, make eye contact and thank that server who’s setting your meal for you. Or you can hold the door open for someone juggling too many bags. These small acts can have a profound impact on the wellbeing on the strangers you’ve just come across. It reminds them that we are all in this together.
Here’s the actual magic, when you extend your goodwill, you’re not just helping the other person. You will find immense pleasure in serving the other person with your kindness. It will feel like this beautiful, reciprocal energy that fills you up even as you pour it out.
And yet, in the hustle of our lives, we forget. We get caught up in our own heads, our own agendas, our own struggles. We forget that a single act of kindness can be a lifeline for someone else. A reminder that they matter and they are visible in this huge ocean of humanity.

Goodwill Beyond the Individual
Now, let’s zoom out. Because goodwill isn’t just about you and me. It’s about us. All of us.
When goodwill becomes a collective practice, it transforms communities. It builds bridges where there were walls. It turns “us versus them” into “we.” In a world where differences are inevitable – whether it’s race, religion, politics, or just plain old personality clashes – goodwill is the glue that holds us together.
It’s the patience to listen when you’d rather argue. The willingness to understand when you’d rather judge. The choice to respond with respect when you’d rather retaliate.
And here’s the thing about goodwill: it’s contagious. One act of kindness inspires another. And another. And before you know it, you’ve created a ripple effect that reaches far beyond what you can see.
Goodwill as a Reflection of Self
At its core, goodwill is about seeing yourself in others. It’s about recognizing that the person in front of you – whether they’re a friend, a stranger, or even someone you disagree with – is a mirror. They’re you, in another form, living another life, carrying another set of struggles.
When you really get that, treating others with kindness becomes second nature. Because how can you harm a reflection of yourself? How can you dismiss someone who is, in essence, you?
Disagreements will always happen. Conflicts will always arise. But goodwill gives us a choice: we can respond with anger and destruction, or we can respond with respect and understanding. The choice we make doesn’t just define the moment; it defines who we are.

Living with Goodwill
So, let’s look at how goodwill looks like in action every single day.
– Be polite, even when you’re angry.
– Respect people, even when you don’t respect their opinions.
– Be kind whenever you can.
– Embrace change instead of clinging to rigidity.
– Walk away from disrespect, but never from your dignity.
– Avoid speaking ill of others. Hold off on that gossip LOL
– Lift people up instead of pulling them down.
Basically, when you choose goodwill, you’re choosing peace over violence and love over fear.
It Can Be a Ripple Or a Flood
Goodwill doesn’t have to be moments of virtue that we sprinkle throughout the day. It can become the way we live our lives. Its the best investment in our human experience, because it doesn’t touch others, we get touched by our own kindness too.
And when people see what you’re doing, they would want to emulate and continue feeding the kindness beast. And once it grows, there won’t be a ripple of goodwill, it will be a flood.
Thank you, when goodwill prevails, we all win.
