A Simple Life From A By Gone Era
If you were a 20th Century Parent: All you had to do was a set of 3 tasks on repeat each and every day:
- Bathe
- Clothe
- Feed
If you’re a child of the 21st Century though, you’re:
- Over scheduled
- Over supervised and
- Burnt out from both ends
Our Modern Day Parenting
We parent like we will live forever. We parent like our children will stay children forever.
Why can’t we seize this moment we have with them – read that book they want us to read, look outside of the window like they want us to, or stare into their eyes long enough so they can finish telling us about their awesome day?!
Ask any parent, and they will tell you that integrity and the ability of their children to grow up to stand on their own two feet is very important. We know what we must teach, but we just don’t know where to start.
Awareness Of Our Parenting Styles
Can we teach a 4-year-old what commitment is? Of course. We can begin the journey by shifting our deep-rooted paradigms that we’ve nothing to learn once we become parent leaders. Is there a better way to be a lifelong learner than being a parent? Parenting teaches us to be humble, to be open minded, learn from our mistakes, to cope with our emotions and to get out of our comfort zone, doesn’t it?
So, let’s know ourselves and our child’s temperament. That will help us ease any potential conflict of expectations.
And when we work with our children every day and night to establish communication lines of our love and our hope for them, we set them up for success. Instead of giving them tools, we can simply then teach them who they are and what they’re capable of. Are we doing everything it takes for our kids to be real world ready?

Skills And Tools For The Digital Future
Only when children feel secure, and in harmony with their physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual (how they feel about themselves), they can work towards living in harmony with their true potential.
Whether they’re navigating boroughs or board rooms, there are some tools they can be taught to be effective and efficient. Wonder, boredom, failure, creativity are just a few of them.
We must teach them how to live without us. We must remove all barriers in their environment that prohibit self-learning. We must give them more responsibility because more responsibility means more empowerment. And this is how you start. It’s not about can you help them; it’s about will you help them before giving them a chance to figure things out?
Build Relationships With Children
• Don’t stop exploring.
• Don’t forget to be silly.
• Do apologize when you mess up.
• Do what you like.
• Share funny and embarrassing stories.
• Share ideas and finish projects.
• Talk about hard things to do.
• Talk about real life heroes.
• Talk about anything – family, tummy aches, anything.

“Teachers enter the profession to provide a well-rounded education and support the whole student, which includes social and emotional skills development. SEL is a critical part of every child’s growth, both as students and as contributing members of society. Teachers have shared with us how important this is – now it’s up to all of us to support them in this essential work.”
~ Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers
