What Is Sandhyavandanam?
Somayajula Venkatachala Sastry, our grandfather (mine by marriage), is the author of the book of Sandhyavandanam in Telugu titled, సంధ్యాతత్వ సుభోధిని, that we have uploaded HERE for the benefit of humanity.
Sandhyavandanam is a progressive inner journey, not a checklist. Each step prepares the practitioner for the next.
Here we’re discussing the detailed sequence for the Yajurvediya Trikala Sandhyavandanam. There are many other flavors depending on which shakha your ancestors belong to.
Core Philosophy: The Mind (Manas) & Brahman
The Mind (Manas): Mental discipline and purification are central to Sandhyavandanam. During purification (Mantrachamana), the practitioner specifically prays for protection from sins committed by the mind (manasa), speech, and body.
Worship of Brahman: Worshipping at twilight (Sandhya) is equivalent to worshipping the Supreme Reality (Brahman) itself, which requires focused mental devotion.
Mental Alignment: Sandhyāvandanam is training the mind to pause, purify, and align with something larger — three times a day.
The Ritual Sequence
I. Preparation (ప్రాతః కాలకృత్యములు)
Wake up at dawn, perform morning ablutions, bathe, wear clean clothes, and sit in a clean spot facing East or North.
II. Puranaachamana (పురాణాచమనము)
Sipping water while reciting 24 names of Vishnu and touching various sensory organs (eyes, ears, nose) and body parts to “awaken” them.
Sipping Quotes:
III. Bhasmadharana & Smrutyachamana
Applying sacred ash and performing a second round of purification sips.
IV. Bhutocchatana (భూతోచ్చాటనము)
Reciting a verse to clear negative spiritual influences from the surroundings:
V. Pranayama (ప్రాణాయామము)
Breath work performed according to one’s capability. It involves closing the nostrils with specific mudras.
Mudra Technique: A householder (Grihastha) uses all five fingers, while a student (Brahmachari) uses the thumb, ring finger, and little finger.
Mantras: Four different mantras (61, 36, 26, and 13 syllables).
VI. Sankalpa (సంకల్పము)
Explicitly stating the intention for the ritual:
VII. Marjana (మార్జనము)
Sprinkling water for physical and spiritual cleansing:
VIII. Mantrachamana / Abbhakshana (మంత్రాచమనము)
Sipping water while reciting prayers to repent for daily sins.
IX. Punarmarjana
A second, more elaborate round of water sprinkling.
X. Papapurushadahanamu (పాపపురుషదహనము)
A visualization exercise to purge the self of “sinful” tendencies. Visualize sins as a small black figure inside the body and “transfer” it into water via the breath for destruction.
A Deep Dive: The Role of Prāṇāyāma
Prāṇāyāma in Sandhyāvandanam is not “yoga exercise.” It is mental purification through breath.
Breath is the bridge between body and mantra.
- Steadying the Mind: The mind is restless by nature; prāṇāyāma is prescribed before Gayatri japa specifically to quiet the mind.
- Chitta-Shuddhi: The purpose is clarity of mind, not physical stamina. The breath should be gentle and rhythmic.
- Mantra Integration: Mantra + breath must move together. Inhalation, retention, and exhalation must be mentally aligned with sacred syllables.
- Internal Sacrifice: It is a subtle internal yajña where distraction and ego are offered into the breath and released.
Our Grandfather’s Commentary: The Inner Journey
“Sandhyāvandanam, when performed with understanding, discipline, and devotion, becomes a means for inner refinement and steady awareness.”
Here are the step-by-step Insights:
1. Āchamanam – Resetting the system: Washing away external distraction; an intentional transition from ordinary time to sacred time.
2. Prāṇāyāma – Making the mind fit: Mental instability is physiological first. Calm the breath, and the mind follows.
3. Saṅkalpa – Declaring conscious intent: A psychological contract: “I know who I am, where I am in time, and why I am doing this.”
4. Mārjana – Internal cleansing: Acknowledging that impurities are mental first, physical second.
5. Aghamarṣaṇa – Releasing inner burdens: Not self-punishment, but a ritualized reset of conscience.
6. Arghya-pradāna – Aligning with cosmic rhythm: An acknowledgment that individual life is sustained by cosmic order (ṛta).
7. Gāyatrī Japa – The heart of the practice: Everything before it is preparation. One fully present Gayatri is better than many distracted repetitions.
8. Upasthāna – Standing in gratitude: Final prayers are acknowledgments and quiet reverence rather than petitions.
Why It Is Relevant in the Modern Age
Pranayama is a precursor to modern “Box Breathing” or “Alternate Nostril Breathing,” scientifically recognized for calming the nervous system. Breath is the key that unlocks alignment. Without breath awareness, ritual becomes habit. With breath awareness, ritual becomes inner transformation. And deep intentional breath steadies the mind, and a steady mind reveals the truth.
Performing these steps at dawn, noon, and dusk provides regular “breaks” for introspection in a busy world. Systematic washing and touching of sense organs encourage sensory awareness and physical cleanliness. The Sankalpa is essentially the practice of intentional living, which is a common tool in modern productivity coaching.

About Sanatana Dharma
Brahman alone is real; the universe is mithya – neither fully real nor unreal, but an appearance. The individual self (jiva) is none other than Brahman itself, not separate or different. This is the true teaching of the scriptures, as revealed by Vedanta. ~ Verse 20 from Brahma Jnānavali Māla
