This weekend, our 21-year-old graduated from The School of Economics at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. The School of Economics is part of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at Georgia Tech.
President Ángel Cabrera spoke warmly to the graduating class and told the crowd of more than a thousand families that this weekend there were around 7000 students graduating from Bachelor’s, Masters and Ph.D. programs.
The commencement ceremony for the Computing and Liberal Arts colleges started around 6pm on the 7th of May and was held at the basketball court at the McCamish Pavilion.
Senator Raphael Warnock from Georgia, known for his fight for social justice, delivered the keynote address. At one point he urged the students to “stand up,” and they literally did, which brought a moment of unexpected laughter to the evening. He asked them to choose the path of righteousness and to be the best they can be.
The ceremony reminded me of my own graduation almost 25 years ago to this date. And shortly in a few months I would be married too. Those were strange times for personal freedom and identity that no one from the Gen Z or those from the pre social media era will be able to fully understand now.
I did not know then what life held for me back when I was graduating. And the truth is that I don’t know even now. But, I know this. Life is beautiful just the way it is, with its uncertainty and its endless possibilities. And as long as I’m here, I will try my best to use this precious opportunity to live each breathtaking day to its fullest.
