What Is Swatting

Swatting is the action or practice of making a prank call to emergency services in an attempt to bring about the dispatch of a large number of armed police officers to a particular address. “Swatting” is defined as a false report of an ongoing emergency or threat of violence intended to prompt an immediate law enforcement response.

Swatting is a federal crime in the US – one man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for it. Swatting gets its name from the special weapons and tactics (SWAT) division of police – the sort of police units usually called in to deal with active shooters and similar situations.

To protect yourself from swatting, there are steps you should take to hide personal information. Keep any info about your location private, and use tools to guard your computer’s IP address. If your job involves receiving packages or letters, consider using a P.O. Box – this lets you receive mail away from your home.
