No, I haven’t gotten out of bed on the wrong side or anything, but things like this irritate me. Elon Musk, in his infinite wisdom and power, has shared yet another hard-hitting tweet.
This time, it’s a video of an AI-generated avatar that he apparently found cute or worth sharing. The problem is, it features a character that looks like a young woman, possibly early mid teens, with cat ears. She’s wearing a revealing multicolored outfit adorned with gears and tools, and exaggerated features like large eyes and a playful pose.
Here’s his tweet, and a comment underneath that sums it up.
See, what Musk does in his free time is none of my business. He has had 4 or 5 partners and 14 children with them. I’m happy for that man, because he seems to be getting laid and atleast has the goods to prove his vigor and vitality. And I’m happy someone’s procreating, especially when the world is experiencing a deep existential threat due to low birth rates.
But he also seems to block people who create fan art, especially if the pictures don’t look handsome.
OK, that’s below the belt. Let me get back to the topic.
Sharing a video of what appears to be a sexualized young female AI character when you’re a middle-aged man is already unsettling. And the optics become terrible especially considering how there’s a photo of Musk with Ghislaine Maxwell, a convicted sex trafficker and close associate of Jeffrey Epstein. Musk has claimed several times that Maxwell had photobombed him at a 2014 Vanity Fair party.
Not to mention, a likely prompt that might have generated the AI girl’s video: “Generate anime-looking highly sexualized video of a girl in a cat costume. Make her look underage. Optimize for engagement”.
Musk has tremendous influence among Gen Z and people my age around the globe. He might be quirky, nerdy, and occasionally clueless about what his platform has become based on his answers in podcaster Nikhil Kamath’s interview. For me, it’s an endless river of memes, outrage, and viral nonsense.
The point is the influence at Elon Musk’s scale comes with tremendous responsibility. You cannot run one of the most powerful communication platforms on Earth and then behave like you’re just another anonymous account posting whatever strange thing to boost your engagement.
Yikes.
